How collagen induction therapy works
Collagen induction therapy, or microneedling, is a targeted treatment that helps stimulate the skin’s natural repair mechanisms. Using a device to create controlled micro-channels in the dermal layer, it boosts collagen and elastin production — two essential proteins that help maintain skin strength, structure and elasticity.
As we age, the body’s natural production of these proteins slows down. Factors like sun exposure, pollution and smoking can exacerbate premature skin ageing, among other variables. Collagen induction therapy aims to rejuvenate the skin from within by supporting collagen synthesis. This treatment targets skin texture, acne scars and wrinkles, helping to achieve a smoother, more refreshed complexion.
Is this treatment right for you?
Collagen induction therapy can be beneficial for healthy individuals looking to refine the appearance of acne, address mild pigmentation irregularities and smooth uneven skin texture. While not a solution for all skin concerns, microneedling can be used as part of a broader skincare regimen to support long-term skin health.
However, if any of the following applies to you, this treatment may not be suitable:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have active breakouts (e.g., inflamed lesions) or infections (herpes, warts or other conditions) in the treatment area.
- You have moderate to severe chronic skin conditions, including eczema or psoriasis.
- You have a history of keloid scarring.
- You have a weakened immune system or are undergoing chemotherapy.
What to expect before, during and after treatment
Before treatment
Before undergoing collagen induction therapy, you will have a detailed consultation with a clinician at Skin Renu. This includes:
- A comprehensive facial assessment.
- A review of your medical history, including any current medications you are taking.
- A discussion of your skin goals, suitability and expectations.
Your clinician will also outline potential risks, side effects and post-treatment care requirements. If SkinPen isn’t suitable for you, we’ll suggest alternative treatments that better match your needs and circumstances.
During treatment
The treatment is performed at our Balmain clinic with a trained clinician. Some people experience a warm or scratching sensation, especially over bony areas. Sessions may take between 30–60 minutes, depending on the treatment area. Your clinician may apply a topical anaesthetic to help keep you comfortable during the treatment.
After treatment — side effects and risks
Following treatment, your skin may feel warm, tight or sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn.
Some may experience these possible side effects:
- Redness and swelling for up to five days
- Mild discomfort or tightness
- Dryness or flaking as the skin renews
- Small pinpoint bruising in some cases
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (temporary)
- Minor infection (rare)
- Temporary scarring (very rare)
Please contact a healthcare provider immediately if you experience bleeding lasting more than 24 hours, blistering in the treated area, swelling that persists beyond a week or any other unusual symptoms.
Post-treatment care
Following your treatment, you will receive detailed aftercare instructions to support optimal recovery and results.
First 24 hours:
- Do not wash your face or apply makeup — you can apply a gentle moisturiser as instructed by your clinician.
- Avoid touching, picking or peeling flaking skin.
First 48 hours:
- Apply a cold compress (wrapped in a cloth) if needed.
- Stay hydrated and avoid hot showers, saunas and sweating.
- Avoid direct sun exposure; wear SPF 50+ sunscreen if outdoors.
First seven to 14 days:
- Use only gentle skincare (cleanser, moisturiser, SPF).
- Avoid cosmeceuticals with active ingredients (e.g., AHAs, BHAs, Retinol/Retin-A).
- Avoid self-tanning products.
- If you smoke, consider stopping to support healing.
- Avoid UV exposure for two weeks or more to prevent possible pigmentation.
Please note that individual responses vary — outcomes depend on multiple factors, including skin type, age and adherence to post-treatment care.
