How collagen induction therapy works

Collagen induction therapy, or microneedling, is a targeted treatment that helps stimulate the skin’s natural repair mechanisms. Using a device to create controlled micro-channels in the dermal layer, it boosts collagen and elastin production — two essential proteins that help maintain skin strength, structure and elasticity.

As we age, the body’s natural production of these proteins slows down. Factors like sun exposure, pollution and smoking can exacerbate premature skin ageing, among other variables. Collagen induction therapy aims to rejuvenate the skin from within by supporting collagen synthesis. This treatment targets skin texture, acne scars and wrinkles, helping to achieve a smoother, more refreshed complexion.

Is this treatment right for you?

Collagen induction therapy can be beneficial for healthy individuals looking to refine the appearance of acne, address mild pigmentation irregularities and smooth uneven skin texture. While not a solution for all skin concerns, microneedling can be used as part of a broader skincare regimen to support long-term skin health.

However, if any of the following applies to you, this treatment may not be suitable:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have active breakouts (e.g., inflamed lesions) or infections (herpes, warts or other conditions) in the treatment area.
  • You have moderate to severe chronic skin conditions, including eczema or psoriasis.
  • You have a history of keloid scarring.
  • You have a weakened immune system or are undergoing chemotherapy.

What to expect before, during and after treatment

Before treatment

Before undergoing collagen induction therapy, you will have a detailed consultation with a clinician at Skin Renu. This includes:

  • A comprehensive facial assessment.
  • A review of your medical history, including any current medications you are taking.
  • A discussion of your skin goals, suitability and expectations.

Your clinician will also outline potential risks, side effects and post-treatment care requirements. If SkinPen isn’t suitable for you, we’ll suggest alternative treatments that better match your needs and circumstances.

During treatment

The treatment is performed at our Balmain clinic with a trained clinician. Some people experience a warm or scratching sensation, especially over bony areas. Sessions may take between 30–60 minutes, depending on the treatment area. Your clinician may apply a topical anaesthetic to help keep you comfortable during the treatment.

After treatment — side effects and risks

Following treatment, your skin may feel warm, tight or sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn.

Some may experience these possible side effects:

  • Redness and swelling for up to five days
  • Mild discomfort or tightness
  • Dryness or flaking as the skin renews
  • Small pinpoint bruising in some cases
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (temporary)
  • Minor infection (rare)
  • Temporary scarring (very rare)

Please contact a healthcare provider immediately if you experience bleeding lasting more than 24 hours, blistering in the treated area, swelling that persists beyond a week or any other unusual symptoms.

Post-treatment care

Following your treatment, you will receive detailed aftercare instructions to support optimal recovery and results.

First 24 hours:

  • Do not wash your face or apply makeup — you can apply a gentle moisturiser as instructed by your clinician.
  • Avoid touching, picking or peeling flaking skin.

First 48 hours:

  • Apply a cold compress (wrapped in a cloth) if needed.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid hot showers, saunas and sweating.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure; wear SPF 50+ sunscreen if outdoors.

First seven to 14 days:

  • Use only gentle skincare (cleanser, moisturiser, SPF).
  • Avoid cosmeceuticals with active ingredients (e.g., AHAs, BHAs, Retinol/Retin-A).
  • Avoid self-tanning products.
  • If you smoke, consider stopping to support healing.
  • Avoid UV exposure for two weeks or more to prevent possible pigmentation.

Please note that individual responses vary — outcomes depend on multiple factors, including skin type, age and adherence to post-treatment care.

To explore whether collagen induction therapy is suitable for you, book a consultation at Skin Renu in Balmain. Our experienced clinicians will assess your skin and develop a customised approach to support your skincare goals.

Why use it?

SkinPen is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of acne scars. It is a minimally invasive procedure performed in-clinic with little downtime. As the first FDA-cleared microneedling device, SkinPen sets the industry standard for safety.

How does it work?

SkinPen creates thousands of “micro” skin punctures per second to stimulate the skin’s natural wound-healing process. This process of inflammation, proliferation and remodelling promotes the formation of collagen without causing scar tissue, potentially resulting in a more rejuvenated appearance.

What kind of textural improvements can you expect with SkinPen skin therapy?

Collagen induction therapy with the SkinPen helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth skin texture and soften the appearance of acne and surgical scars. However, results may vary based on several factors.

What does the treatment feel like?

SkinPen creates controlled micro-injuries to stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing process, while minimising cellular damage. The goal of the treatment is to remodel the skin surface while keeping the overall structure intact. Treatments take about 30 minutes, depending on the area treated and the desired results. A local anaesthetic is applied to minimise discomfort.

What can I expect before the treatment?

During your initial consultation your goals will clarified and your suitability for the treatment will be assessed. Your skin care routine will be scrutinized and if you are using a prescription or cosmetic vitamin A you will be asked to stop three to seven days prior to treatment. You will be given a list of dos and don’ts (e.g. no waxing or depilatory creams, peels or exfoliating, direct sun exposure etc.) to help you achieve the best possible outcome.

How many treatments will I need?

For optimal results, multiple collagen induction therapy treatments are typically recommended, spaced about four weeks apart. A clinician at our Balmain clinic will assess your skin and recommend a treatment plan suited to your skin profile.

What are the possible side effects?

SkinPen treatments are generally well tolerated, with severe side effects being rare. Most side effects occur when patients do not follow appropriate pre- and post-care instructions, apply non-approved skincare or do not disclose vital information to their treating professional during their initial consultation.

Side effects may include skin infection, temporary post inflammatory pigmentation, tram track appearance on the skin, bruising, temporary redness, allergic granuloma formation and those with a history of cold sores may experience a flare up.

If you notice any unusual or persistent symptoms, contact us and your healthcare provider right away.

Who is suitable for collagen induction therapy?

Suitability is determined on an individual basis. A consultation with one of our experienced clinicians is required to assess your skin type, medical history and treatment goals. Some skin conditions or medical concerns may make the treatment unsuitable.

Does collagen induction therapy hurt?

Pain tolerance varies from person to person. Some individuals experience a tingling or mild scratching sensation during the treatment, especially over bony areas such as the cheekbones.
